OPD Marine Unit Leads Major Oakland Estuary Cleanup
Over the next two weeks, the Oakland Police Department Marine Unit will remove 16 sunken vessels from the Oakland Estuary. Six months ago, dozens of vessels were illegally anchored in the Jack London Aquatic Center basin, creating environmental hazards and limiting water access.
The Marine Unit worked with the City of Oakland and the City Attorney’s Office to develop an enforcement strategy. Officers identified vessels, issued notices, and arranged voluntary surrenders. They traveled as far as Sacramento and San Jose to locate owners and secure vessels for removal.
With support from the San Francisco Police Department Marine Unit, the U.S. Coast Guard, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, the Port of Oakland, and Lind Marine, OPD has removed more than 50 abandoned, derelict, or surrendered vessels. These efforts have improved navigation, increased public access, and reduced pollution risks. OPD also thanks the non-profit group “I Heart Oakland-Alameda Estuary,” whose more than 100 volunteers participated in a shoreline cleanup last weekend.
“This is what partnership looks like,” said Oakland Police Chief James Beere. “This effort is more than removing abandoned vessels. It’s about protecting our waterways and making sure Oaklanders and visitors can safely access their waterfront. I’m proud of the work of our Marine Unit and grateful to the partners and community members who are helping us reclaim these public spaces.”

The City of Oakland has secured more than $3 million in state and federal grants to support ongoing efforts, including vessel removal, public education, and shoreline cleanups.
