COASTAL STORM & FLOODING PREPARATION
The Ocean Township Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring the developing nor’easter expected to impact our area tonight through the weekend.
The forecast has become more concerning for our area, particularly for strong winds and back-bay tidal flooding tonight through Saturday night.
The primary concern for Ocean Township continues to be Barnegat Bay flooding. The NWS expects multiple rounds of minor to moderate tidal flooding into the weekend and specifically identifies Barnegat Bay as one of the back-bay areas expected to see the most significant impacts. The highest tides are currently forecast during the Saturday morning and/or Saturday night high-tide cycles. Widespread flooding of low-lying and bayside roadways is possible, with some roads potentially becoming impassable.
Waretown / Barnegat Bay High Tides:
- Friday, September 25: 10:13 AM and 10:28 PM
- Saturday, September 26: 10:49 AM and 11:06 PM
- Sunday, September 27: 11:25 AM and 11:46 PM
Particular attention should be given to both Saturday high-tide cycles, when the NWS currently expects the highest tides and an increased potential for flooding in our typical low-lying and bayside areas.
Winds have also increased from yesterday’s forecast. A High Wind Warning is now in effect for the Atlantic coast, with north to northeast winds of 30–40 mph and gusts up to 60 mph possible. Farther inland, gusts of 30–45 mph are forecast. The strongest winds are expected tonight through Saturday night, potentially continuing into Sunday near the coast.
Forecast confidence is now high through Saturday night. Sunday remains more uncertain and will depend on the exact track of the coastal low. If the storm remains closer to the coast, significant coastal impacts, rain and wind could continue into Sunday.
Residents in low-lying areas prone to flooding who are concerned about their vehicles may use alternate parking areas along Railroad Avenue and the baseball fields. Vehicles should be moved before flooding occurs. Please leave your contact information on a piece of paper on the dashboard.
