We have been tracking the nor'easter that will impact our area this weekend. The current forecast calls for total rainfall of 1.5 to 3 inches with wind gusts of 35-40mph. A wind advisory has been issued until 6AM Sunday. The advisory states: "The strong winds will last for a very long duration, possibly exceeding 24-36 hours. Considering the long duration rainfall and the full foliage of trees, impacts may be exacerbated." 

Borough officials have been busy preparing for the storm. The Department of Public Works (DPW) has cleared catch basins in flood prone areas, placed sandbags in strategic locations and prepared the water pump in case of flooding. DPW staff is scheduled for the weekend to respond to any flooding issues or fallen trees.  As a reminder, the DPW can be reached after hours and during the weekend by calling the Leonia Police Department at (201) 944-0800. 

Members of the DPW and the Police Department participated in a briefing held by PSE&G this afternoon. PSE&G has increased their staffing for the weekend and is prepared for the storm. For wires down or other dangerous conditions, please call 9-1-1 to report the emergency. Power outages should be reported directly to PSE&G via their mobile app, website, texting "Out" to 4PSEG (47734), or calling 800-436-PSEG (7734). Please do not call 9-1-1 or the Leonia Police Department to report a power outage. 

Unfortunately, the Rotary Club's Oktoberfest event scheduled for Saturday, September 26th, in Wood Park has been cancelled due to the weather.  The Environmental Commission's Halloween Costume Swap will be held Saturday from 9:30am to 12:30pm in the Recreation Center. 

As the saying goes, "We are hoping for the best and preparing for the worst." Some steps that you can take to help prepare for the storm:

• Charge cell phones and other essential electronic devices
• Keep flashlights and fresh batteries readily available, avoid using candles if possible
• Secure outdoor furniture, garbage cans and any other loose objects that could become airborne in strong winds
• Never touch or approach downed wires, always assume they are energized and dangerous
• Use portable generators only outdoors and away from doors and windows to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
• Never drive through flooded roads and avoid travel during heavy rain and high winds
