Veolia has notified the City of Hoboken that portions of eastern Hoboken are now under a Boil Water Advisory as required by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).   
 
The Boil Water Advisory (BWA) is a necessary precaution, following a 12” water main break at Sinatra Drive and Ninth Street, which was caused by a contractor and resulted in water pressure dropping below the recommended threshold. The water main has since been isolated, and repairs are underway.  

Residents between 2nd Street and 12th Street from Bloomfield Street to Sinatra Drive are advised to boil water for all consumption. (See below for more information) 

This includes: 

• Both sides of Second Street from Bloomfield Street to Sinatra Drive 
• Both sides of 12th Street from Bloomfield Street to Sinatra Drive North 
• Both sides of Sinatra Drive from Second Street to 12th Street 
• Both Sides of Bloomfield Street from Second Street to 12th Street
• All blocks within the above boundaries 

In the interest of public health, a boil water advisory is being issued in the immediate area of the break until testing of the water supply is deemed satisfactory.  

The advisory will remain in effect until further notice, as testing on water samples will be conducted once the water main is repaired and pressure is restored. Veolia will notify Hoboken customers when testing indicates the boil water order can be lifted, and the water supply quality is deemed satisfactory. Testing typically takes 24 to 48 hours.  

Limited bottled water available for impacted residents  

Bottled water will be distributed to impacted residents only, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. tonight, or until supplies run out, in the lobby of 1 Marine View Plaza and at the Elks Club, 1005 Washington St.  

Boil water for consumption 
 
Residents and businesses should boil their tap water for at least one minute for the following even if their water is filtered at home: drinking, cooking, baking, washing dishes, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets or other consumption.   
 
The BWA is a necessary precaution as low water pressure could potentially allow for the presence of harmful microbes in the drinking water system. Microbes in drinking water can cause illness and could pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes.

What should I do? What does this mean? 

Effective immediately and until further notice, community members within the area are instructed to bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow the tap water to cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking; preparing foods; mixing baby formula, food, juices or drinks; washing vegetables and fruit; cooking; making ice; brushing teeth; and washing dishes until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. 

The following measures are also recommended: 

• Throw away uncooked food or beverages or ice cubes made with tap water today; 
• Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking; 
• Do not swallow water while showering or bathing;   
• Rinse hand-washed dishes with a diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of household bleach per gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle; 
• Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms; 
• Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries; and 
• Provide pets with drinking water that has been boiled and cooled.   

Please continue to boil your water until you are notified that the water quality is satisfactory. This advisory will remain in effect until repairs are completed, and testing shows the water quality to be safe.
