COASTAL STORM & FLOODING PREPARATION
The Ocean Township Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring the developing nor’easter expected to impact our area tonight through the weekend.
As we head into the evening, we continue to monitor the nor’easter and the potential impacts to our area. Our primary concerns remain strong winds and tidal flooding along Barnegat Bay, with conditions expected to deteriorate tonight and continue through Saturday night.
Governor Mikie Sherrill has announced a State of Emergency for eight counties, including Ocean County, effective at 5:00 PM today.
The latest National Weather Service briefing has increased the coastal flooding threat, with moderate to major tidal flooding now expected in portions of the region. The highest tides are forecast during the Saturday morning and/or Saturday night high-tide cycles. Widespread flooding of coastal and bayside roadways is possible, some roadways may become impassable, and vulnerable structures could be impacted. Rainfall may also contribute to higher water levels in some locations.
Waretown / Barnegat Bay High Tides:
- Friday: 10:28 PM
- Saturday: 10:49 AM and 11:06 PM
- Sunday: 11:25 AM and 11:46 PM
Strong north to northeast winds remain another concern, with no significant change to the wind forecast. The strongest winds are expected tonight through Saturday night. Sustained winds of 30–40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are possible, while inland areas could experience gusts of 30–45 mph.
Forecast confidence remains high through Saturday night, while conditions for Sunday remain more uncertain and will depend on the track of the coastal low.
Residents in low-lying areas prone to flooding who are concerned about their vehicles may use alternate parking areas along Railroad Avenue and the baseball fields. Vehicles should be moved before flooding occurs. Please leave your contact information on a piece of paper on the dashboard.
