COASTAL STORM & FLOODING PREPARATION
The Ocean Township Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring the developing nor’easter impacting our area today. The forecast remains on track this morning, with our primary concerns continuing to be tidal flooding, strong winds and rainfall through the weekend.
Coastal flooding remains a significant concern today. Moderate to major coastal flooding is expected across the region, with the highest tides anticipated during this morning and tonight’s high-tide cycles. Widespread flooding of Bayfront roadways is possible, and some roadways may become impassable.
Waretown / Barnegat Bay High Tides:
- Saturday: 10:49 AM and 11:06 PM
- Sunday: 11:25 AM and 11:46 PM
Strong north to northeast winds also remain on track, with the strongest winds expected today into tonight. For our area sustained winds of 30–40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph remain possible. Farther inland, gusts of 30–50 mph are forecast.
Rainfall is also becoming an increased concern. The latest forecast indicates as much as 3 inches across much of eastern New Jersey, with locally higher amounts possible. Rain is expected over a prolonged 48–60 hour period. While significant freshwater flooding is generally not expected, heavier rainfall could result in isolated poor-drainage , flooding, and runoff may worsen existing coastal flooding conditions.
The State of Emergency for Ocean County remains in effect.
Please avoid unnecessary travel through flooded areas. If you must travel through an area affected by flooding, slow down and use extreme caution. Once flooding begins, areas with standing water are NO-WAKE ZONES. Wakes can push additional water into homes, garages, yards and neighboring properties and can significantly worsen flooding conditions.
Residents in low-lying areas prone to flooding who are concerned about their vehicles may use alternate parking areas along Railroad Avenue and the baseball fields. Vehicles should be moved before flooding occurs. Please leave your contact information on a piece of paper on the dashboard.
