On September 26, 2026, at approximately 11:37 a.m., officers from the Petaluma Police Department were dispatched to the area of Old Redwood Highway and North McDowell Boulevard for a report of a solo-vehicle collision involving a vehicle into a tree.
Upon arrival, officers located the driver, identified as Julia Hales (40-year-old San Rafael resident) standing next to her vehicle. It was determined that Hales had left the roadway and struck a small tree causing the vehicle's airbag to deploy. During their initial contact, officers observed indications consistent with alcohol impairment and initiated a driving under the influence (DUI) investigation.
During the DUI investigation, which included field sobriety evaluations, Hales submitted a preliminary alcohol screening (PAS) test which indicated she had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .32%, four times the legal limit. She ultimately was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI. Hales was transported to a local hospital, where she was medically cleared, and subsequently booked into the Sonoma County Jail on DUI-related charges.
