The Rialto Police Department’s Street Crime Attack Team (SCAT) arrested two individuals following an investigation that resulted in the recovery of a loaded handgun, a shotgun, ammunition, and firearm magazines.

On Saturday, September 26, 2026, SCAT officers were conducting an investigation involving Angel Gonzalez, 27, a documented member of a criminal street gang and a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms.

During the investigation, officers developed information indicating Gonzalez was in possession of a firearm. Using information obtained during the investigation, officers located Gonzalez at a residence in the 300 block of Whipple Mountain Road, in the City of San Bernardino.

Gonzalez was subsequently stopped in a vehicle as he left the residence. During the stop, officers located a loaded 9mm handgun on the floorboard where Gonzalez had been seated.

Gonzalez told officers he was staying at the Whipple Mountain Road residence. Officers subsequently conducted a compliance check at the residence and located several handgun magazines and ammunition inside the bedroom where Gonzalez reported staying. Officers also discovered a Remington pump-action shotgun underneath a bed.

During the investigation, officers determined the shotgun belonged to Gonzalez’s roommate, a 34-year-old adult male. The firearm was reportedly stored unlocked beneath a bed with shotgun shells nearby. Of particular concern, an 8-year-old was asleep on the same bed where the firearm was located, and officers observed no apparent measures to prevent the child from accessing the firearm or ammunition.

Gonzalez was arrested for violations of California Penal Code 29800(a)(1), felon in possession of a firearm, and Penal Code 3454. Gonzalez’s roommate was arrested for a violation of California Penal Code 25100(a), criminal storage of a firearm. Both were booked into the West Valley Detention Center without incident.

The Rialto Police Department maintains a zero-tolerance approach toward convicted felons, criminal street gang members, and other prohibited persons who illegally possess firearms. Individuals who choose to illegally arm themselves, particularly those with demonstrated ties to criminal street gangs, pose an unacceptable risk to the communities we serve.

The department’s Street Crime Attack Team proactively identifies and investigates individuals whose criminal activity and illegal possession of firearms threaten public safety. Removing illegally possessed firearms from the hands of prohibited persons remains a priority for the Rialto Police Department.

“This investigation demonstrates exactly why proactive enforcement is so important,” said Rialto Police Chief Mark Kling. “Convicted felons and gang members who illegally possess firearms should understand that our officers, along with our partners at the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office, will actively seek them out, recover those weapons, prosecute, and hold them accountable. We will continue using every lawful resource available to keep illegally possessed firearms out of the hands of those prohibited from having them.”

The Rialto Police Department also reminds all firearm owners of their responsibility to safely and securely store firearms, particularly in homes where children are present. Firearms should be secured in a manner that prevents unauthorized access.
