Traffic Advisory: Construction on multiple critical infrastructure projects continues this fall in southern Hoboken
Construction for multiple projects to improve area infrastructure and resilience are scheduled to continue this month in Hoboken. Residents and drivers are advised to leave extra travel time, as construction may result in increased congestion, delays, and temporary changes to traffic patterns, particularly in southern Hoboken.
Residents and motorists should follow posted detour signs and use caution in construction zones. Please be advised that all project timelines are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
The City will continue to provide updates regarding significant changes to traffic management patterns and construction schedules. For the latest information on ongoing construction projects in Hoboken, visit hobokennj.gov/construction.
Projects, in order of start date, include:
Portal North Bridge Construction: Due to Amtrak and NJ Transit work to transfer the final track to the new Portal North Bridge, weekday Midtown Direct trains will terminate in Hoboken, rather than New York Penn Station, from Oct. 11 through Nov. 16. This may result in increased pedestrian and bus traffic in and around the Hoboken Terminal as train customers transfer onto PATH trains, NJ Transit buses, NY Waterway ferries, or rideshare services to complete their commutes into Manhattan.
NJT has assured the City of Hoboken that in addition to cross-honoring on PATH and NY Waterway ferry service, additional bus service will be provided. Buses are scheduled to operate every two minutes Tuesday through Thursday during the morning rush period, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection - Rebuild by Design Project (NJDEP RBD): NJDEP RBD will require the closure of Grove Street between Observer Highway in Hoboken and 18th Street in Jersey City. The 24/7 closure, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Oct. 13, will result in detours to Marin Boulevard and Jersey Avenue.
NJDEP will implement a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) in coordination with Hoboken and Jersey City which will include detours, police deployment, and additional traffic management measures. Find the NJDEP’s full TMP plan, as well as more information, here: https://dep.nj.gov/floodresilience/rebuild-by-design-hudson-river/public-meetings-construction-updates/
The anticipated six-month closure of Grove Street is required for the relocation of utilities and installation of footings for a flood gate closure which will help prevent storm surge flooding.
LCOR/Hoboken Connect Hudson Street closure: As part of a revitalization associated with the Hoboken Connect project, Hudson Place is scheduled to reopen to vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Monday, Oct. 19. Completed work includes the replacement of a water main, repaving the street, and the addition of a bike lane. This construction will help improve the resiliency of the City’s drinking water infrastructure and multi-modal safety near the Hoboken Terminal.
During the next phase of construction upgrades, Hudson Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between Observer Highway and Hudson Place beginning Monday, Oct. 19.
Access from Observer Highway to Hudson Street will be restricted to NJ Transit buses and NJ Transit Police personnel only. Drivers should follow posted detours. Police will be on site to assist with detours and pedestrian safety.
Jersey City Jersey Avenue Paving Project: The Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority (JCMUA) is scheduled to conduct overnight paving of Jersey Avenue from Monday, Oct. 19 through Wednesday, Oct. 21.
The paving project will require the closure of Jersey Avenue between 14th Street and 18th Street in Jersey City. Motorists should prepare for detours and possible delays.
The City of Hoboken will provide additional information regarding possible impacts to southwestern parts of the City as it becomes available from JCMUA.
