Santa Maria Police Detectives identify and arrest second suspect in an attempted robbery and shooting with assistance from SWAT Team 
On Thursday, October 1, 2026, the Santa Maria Police Detectives, with the assistance of the SMPD SWAT Team, served a warrant on the 100 block of North Western Avenue during the early morning hours. The warrant was in connection with an ongoing investigation to an attempted robbery and shooting which occurred on September 18, 2026, on the 300 block of North Oakley Street.
SMPD identified Irwin Lara, 32 years of age, resident of Santa Maria soon after the initial investigation and he was arrested. The investigation remained active as Detectives continued to locate additional evidence to the crime.
Detectives later identified Israel Gonzalez, 21 years of age, resident of Santa Maria and obtained a search and arrest warrant for him as part of their investigation. Gonzalez was safely taken into custody without incident and the investigation remains ongoing.
Gonzalez was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail for Penal Code 664/187-Attempted Murder, Penal Code 245(a)(2)- Assault with a Firearm, Penal Code 246.3- Negligent Discharge of a Firearm, Penal Code 29800(a)(1)-Felon in Possession of Firearm, and Penal Code 664/211- Attempted Robbery with bail at 1,000,000.
