Take Five Briefing – 10/6
Here is the latest Take Five briefing from the October 6, 2026, meeting of the Mayor and Borough Council:
1) Tina Weishaus Memorial Event, October 18: Council Member Hersh encouraged residents to join Sustainable Highland Park on Sunday, October 18th at 12:30 p.m. at the Highland Park Community Center to celebrate the life and legacy of Tina Weishaus, former Chair of Sustainable Highland Park and a passionate community organizer. Join the unveiling of a new community garden in Tina’s name; a fitting tribute to someone who dedicated so much time and energy to bringing people together and making the Borough a better place. Tina was a beloved volunteer, and her leadership with Sustainable Highland Park left a lasting mark on our community.
2) Garage Sale Weekend, October 17 + 18: Council Member Hale reminded residents that the Townwide Garage Sale is on October 17th and 18th. Residents will have an opportunity to clear out unwanted items while thrifting around town. Want to sell? Fill out this form here. The deadline to register is next week! The week after the garage sale (Tuesday, October 20 & Thursday, October 22), the Department of Public Works will be doing a town wide bulk trash cleanup with no appointment required, but Recycling will not be collected during this week.
3) Tract C Financial Agreement: Borough Council introduced Ordinance No. 26-2140, which authorizes a long-term tax exemption to HP Urban Renewal, LLC (an affiliate of Garden Homes/232 Raritan Avenue LLC) for the Tract C redevelopment project. The ordinance also authorizes the sale of the Borough-owned properties in the project area to the redeveloper. The project will bring 134 residential units, including 20 affordable housing units, along with restaurant, office and retail space and public gathering areas. For more information on Tract C, check out the recent Slide Deck from last month’s community meeting. For more information about the Financial Agreement, the Borough has prepared an overview in a Frequently Answered Questions document. A public hearing on this ordinance is scheduled for the October 20th Council Meeting.
4) Contract Awarded for the Safe Routes to School Intersection Safety Improvements: Borough Council awarded the contract for the 2016 SRTS Infrastructure and Intersection Improvements and ADA Compliance project to AA Beams, LLC. The project was publicly bid based on plans approved by NJDOT, and the award is now subject to NJDOT review and approval. Once that approval is received, the Borough can execute the contract and move toward construction.
5) Woodbridge Avenue Corridor Study Underway: Borough Council authorized an agreement with LRK, Inc. to prepare a corridor study of Woodbridge Avenue as part of the Borough’s ongoing Neighborhood Preservation Program. The study will identify vacant, underutilized, and potentially developable properties and examine opportunities for infill development, helping inform future revitalization strategies for the corridor.
