Winter Weather Preparation: Are You Ready for El Niño?
NOAA’s latest forecast shows El Niño continues to strengthen, with an 83% chance of historic strength during October through December and a 70% chance of historic strength from November through January.
A stronger El Niño increases the likelihood of conditions such as heavy precipitation, mountain snow, flooding, erosion, fallen trees, road closures, and extended utility outages.
While the forecast does not guarantee the timing or severity of individual storms, now is the time to prepare.
The Bear Valley Police Department hosted a Winter Readiness Workshop on October 1 to help residents prepare. Documents and information shared at the workshop are now available online: bvcsd.org/winter-readiness-be-prepared-for-severe-weather
Preparedness checklist:
•Maintain at least seven days of food, water, medications and essential supplies
•Plan for power, heating, cellular and internet outages
•Check generators, batteries and backup heat sources
•Clear drainage areas
•Avoid unnecessary travel during severe conditions and never drive around road closures
•Monitor official District notices, National Weather Service updates and emergency alerts (visit bvcsd.org/nixle to subscribe to CSD emergency alerts)
Take the time now to make sure you and your household are ready for whatever this winter brings.
