The goal is simple: make your vehicle less appealing to a potential thief.

Help Prevent Vehicle Smash-and-Grab Thefts
One of the most frustrating experiences for any vehicle owner is returning to find a broken window and stolen personal belongings. Commonly called a “smash-and-grab,” these thefts usually involve suspects targeting valuables left inside a vehicle rather than stealing the vehicle itself. Unfortunately, victims often bear the cost and inconvenience of replacing stolen property while also dealing with vehicle repairs. The good news is that a few simple precautions can help make your vehicle a less attractive target.
Keep Your Vehicle Visible
Thieves generally prefer areas where they are less likely to be seen or interrupted. When possible:
- Park in busy, visible areas with regular pedestrian or vehicle traffic.
- At night, choose a well-lit parking area, preferably near a light source.
- When available, consider parking in a monitored lot or an area with an attendant or security presence.
- Avoid isolated areas where someone could approach your vehicle unnoticed.
The goal is simple: make your vehicle less appealing to a potential thief.
- Always lock your doors and fully close your windows, even if you're only leaving for a few minutes.
- Activate your vehicle's alarm or security system whenever you park.
- Never leave purses, backpacks, laptops, phones, shopping bags, cash, or other valuables in plain sight.
- Whenever possible, take valuables with you rather than hiding them in the vehicle.
- Don't assume the glove compartment or center console will protect valuables. These are among the first places a thief may check.
- Consider additional visible security measures, such as a steering-wheel locking device, to discourage someone looking for an easy target.
