Community Update: Hate Crime Investigation at Brookside Elementary in San Anselmo

The Central Marin Police Authority is providing an update regarding the investigation into antisemitic graffiti discovered at Brookside Elementary School in San Anselmo on October 3, 2026.

Through a collaborative investigation involving Central Marin Police and the Ross Valley School District, two juveniles have been identified in connection with this incident. Central Marin Police has established substantial criminal evidence to the point that the case has been forwarded to the Marin County District Attorney's Office for criminal charges.

The juvenile suspects are 12 years of age and 13 years of age.  Due to the suspects' status as juveniles and the confidentiality protections afforded to minors, their identities and additional identifying information will not be released.

While the identification of the suspects represents a significant development in this investigation, any determination regarding the filing of criminal charges will be made by the Marin County District Attorney's Office.

The Central Marin Police Authority extends its sincerest appreciation to the Ross Valley School District and community members who provided information and assisted with the investigation. Their cooperation was instrumental in identifying the suspects.

The Central Marin Police Authority takes all reports of hate crimes seriously and remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that every member of our community feels safe, respected, and protected. Acts of antisemitism, hatred, and intimidation have no place in our schools or communities. We recognize the impact incidents of this nature can have on students, families, and the broader community, and we remain committed to thoroughly investigating these offenses and pursuing accountability through the criminal justice system.

The Central Marin Police Authority is currently looking for any suspect information or leads regarding a hate crime and vandalism which occurred over the weekend at Brookside Elementary School in San Anselmo (case #PA26-1488).   

On October 3, 2026, at approximately 8:30 PM, Central Marin Police Authority officers responded to a report of antisemitic images and writings on the asphalt at Brookside Elementary School near the multi-purpose room.  Officers responded, documented, and photographed the offensive images and writing.  The vandalism was classified as a hate crime per the California Penal Code due to the nature of the images and writings and the fact that the asphalt was damaged and defaced.  Officers were unable to remove the vandalism but communicated with school administration to facilitate its removal, which the school was able to do on Saturday night after the report.   

As this time a suspect(s) have not been identified. This crime occurred sometime after school on Friday until the time of call on Saturday night.  If you have any information that may be helpful in identifying the suspect(s), please contact Detective Josh Hamilton at (415) 927-5150.
