SUMMARY: ALPR Technology Assists Deputies in Recovering Carjacked Vehicle and Apprehending Juveniles

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, deputies from Central Station received an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) alert identifying a stolen Kia Optima traveling westbound on 9th Street near Sterling Avenue, in the city of San Bernardino.

The vehicle had been involved in an armed carjacking earlier in the day, during which a firearm was involved. The elderly male victim reported the incident to the San Bernardino Police Department (SBPD).

Using real-time information provided by the  ALPR system, deputies  tracked the vehicle’s movements and located it, initiating a pursuit through the city of San Bernardino that lasted about 13 miles. After committing numerous felony violations, the driver surrendered. Three juveniles occupied the vehicle, including one who was on felony probation for vehicle theft. Two juveniles were arrested and transported to the San Bernardino Juvenile Detention Center.

The effectiveness of the ALPR system was instrumental in providing timely updates that helped deputies identify the vehicle’s location and direction of travel, allowing them to respond quickly and coordinate their efforts. This technology is a valuable law enforcement tool that assists in locating stolen vehicles, investigating serious crimes, and apprehending suspects. The successful recovery of the vehicle allowed the elderly victim to safely regain possession of his property and demonstrated how ALPR technology enhances law enforcement capabilities and helps protect the community.
