With all the severe weather we’ve had lately, we wanted to share some information about caring for the trees on your property and what to do if you’re worried one could become a hazard.
Under the Borough Property Maintenance Code (Section 14-8.1), the care of trees on private property is the responsibility of the property owner. Just like a roof or gutters, trees need some regular attention, and it’s a good idea to look them over from time to time for loose, damaged or low-hanging limbs and branches. If something about one of your trees concerns you, contact a licensed tree expert to come out and assess its overall health. Please make sure the company and its staff are licensed. A tree expert can recommend steps such as corrective structural pruning to keep your trees healthy and reduce the chance of damage.
If you’re worried about a tree on a neighbor’s property, the best first step is usually a friendly conversation. Let them know what you’ve noticed and pass along the information above. The Borough doesn’t have the authority to get involved in matters between neighbors, so talking it through directly is really the best path. Your insurance company can also be a good resource and may be able to offer some guidance.
Where the Borough can help is with trees in the Borough’s right-of-way, which is generally the area along the curb or edge of the pavement. If you think a tree there needs attention, please let us know. If you’re not sure whether a tree is on your property or in the right-of-way, give Borough Hall a call and we’ll be glad to help you figure it out. Also keep in mind that removing any tree 6" or larger in diameter at breast height requires a Borough tree removal permit, even if the tree is dead or in poor health.
