Traffic Safety Reminder: Stay Safe as Daylight Hours Change

As Daylight Saving Time comes to an end, darkness arrives earlier, making it more important than ever to stay alert and visible on the road. Yesterday, three injury collisions occurred during the evening hours, serving as an important reminder for everyone to take extra precautions as visibility decreases.

Whether you're driving, biking, or walking, the Berkeley Police Department encourages everyone to take steps to help keep our community safe.

For Drivers

  • Keep Your Windshield Clean: A clear windshield improves visibility, especially during nighttime driving.
  • Watch for Glare: Be mindful of glare from the setting sun and oncoming headlights. Use your sun visor when needed.
  • Slow Down: Reduce your speed when visibility is limited and watch for pedestrians and bicyclists, especially at intersections and crosswalks.
For Bicyclists and Pedestrians
  • Wear Bright or Reflective Gear: Help drivers see you by wearing light-colored clothing or reflective accessories.
  • Use Lights: Bicyclists should use front and rear lights after dark. Pedestrians can carry a flashlight to help see and be seen.
  • Choose Safe Walking Routes: Use sidewalks whenever available. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic and stay as far from moving vehicles as safely possible.
Let’s all do our part to make Berkeley’s streets safer as the days get shorter. Stay alert, be visible, and look out for one another!
