Halloween Safety Tips
With Halloween approaching this Saturday, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station reminds residents to take precautions while trick-or-treating, driving or welcoming visitors.
FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN
• Have a parent or responsible adult accompany young children while trick-or-treating.
• Plan your route and stay in familiar, well-lit neighborhoods.
• Use crosswalks and look both ways.
COSTUMES AND TREATS
• Choose costumes that allow clear vision and easy movement. Consider face paint instead of masks that may obstruct vision.
• Carry a flashlight or wear reflective clothing.
• Avoid sharp or pointed costume accessories.
• Have an adult inspect treats before children eat them. Discard unwrapped candy or treats with damaged packaging.
FOR DRIVERS
• Slow down and remain alert in residential neighborhoods. Children may enter the roadway unexpectedly.
• Use extra caution near crosswalks, intersections and driveways.
• Remember that masks and costumes may limit a child’s ability to see approaching traffic.
HOME SAFETY
• Keep porches and walkways well lit.
• Remove tripping hazards from paths and steps.
• Keep pets secured during trick-or-treat hours.
