Halloween is just around the corner, Newark!
As families prepare for a night of costumes, candy, and trick-or-treating, the Newark Police Department would like to remind everyone to celebrate safely.

• Plan your trick-or-treating route in advance.
• Young children should be accompanied by an adult.
• Stay in familiar, well-lit neighborhoods.
• Establish a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated.

• Add reflective tape to costumes & candy buckets.
• Carry a flashlight or glow stick.
• Choose costumes that don’t obstruct vision.
• Make sure costumes & shoes fit properly.

• Always use sidewalks & marked crosswalks.
• Look left, right, & left again when crossing streets.
• Never walk between parked vehicles.
• Avoid using phones or other distractions.

• Slow down, especially in residential neighborhoods.
• Watch for children crossing unexpectedly.
• Use extra caution near driveways & parked cars.
• Avoid distractions & never drive impaired.

• Inspect treats before children eat them.
• Discard any unwrapped/damaged candy.
• Check labels for food allergies.
• Keep small candies away from young children.
