Safety Tips for Kids and Adults While You Trick or Treat

As families prepare for a night of fun, I would like to remind everyone that a few simple safety precautions can help make Halloween a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Here are some friendly Halloween safety tips to keep in mind:

● Stick Together! Young children should always be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Older children should travel in groups and stay together throughout the evening.

● Stay in Familiar Areas. Encourage children to trick-or-treat in neighborhoods they know and visit homes with their porch lights on.

● Never Enter a Stranger's Home or Vehicle. Remind children to remain outside when collecting treats and never accept rides from strangers.

● Be Seen! Choose bright-colored costumes or add reflective tape to darker outfits. Carrying flashlights or glow sticks is another great way to help motorists see trick-or-treaters.

● Choose Costumes Wisely. Make sure costumes fit properly to prevent trips and falls. Avoid masks that obstruct vision and costume accessories that could be mistaken for real weapons.

● Use Sidewalks and Crosswalks. Walk on sidewalks whenever possible, cross streets at designated crosswalks, and always look both ways before crossing. Never cross between parked vehicles.

● Avoid Shortcuts. Stay on well-lit streets and sidewalks rather than cutting through alleys, yards, or unfamiliar areas.

Walk, Don't Run! We know Halloween is exciting, but remind children to slow down and watch where they're going to avoid unnecessary injuries.

● Check the Treats! Before children enjoy their Halloween goodies, have an adult inspect the candy and treats. Avoid items with damaged or opened packaging, and be cautious with homemade treats from unfamiliar individuals.

● Drivers, Please Slow Down! Halloween brings additional pedestrian traffic, especially in residential neighborhoods. Stay alert, reduce your speed, and watch carefully for children crossing the street.

A Little Safety Goes a Long Way!

Halloween should be filled with laughter, costumes, candy, and memories. By looking out for one another and following these simple safety reminders, we can all help make Halloween a safe and enjoyable celebration.
