Sheriff's Office warns residents of recent scams, urges public to remain vigilant
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents to remain vigilant against scams involving fraudulent payment demands, as criminals continue to use phone calls, text messages, emails, and social media to deceive individuals into sending money or sharing personal information.
Scammers often impersonate government agencies, law enforcement officers, financial institutions, or well-known businesses. They may claim an individual owes money, has an outstanding warrant, needs to resolve an issue with their bank account, or has won a prize. In many cases, scammers create a sense of urgency, pressuring victims to act immediately to avoid consequences.
One of the biggest warning signs of a scam is when someone insists on receiving payment through a specific method. Residents should be especially cautious of unexpected requests for payment using:
- Bank transfers
- Wire transfers
- Cryptocurrency
- Payment applications
- Gift cards
How to Protect Yourself
Residents are encouraged to take the following precautions to avoid becoming victims of fraud:
- Be cautious of unexpected communications. Do not immediately trust unsolicited calls, messages, or emails, even if they appear to come from a familiar organization or government agency.
- Question unusual payment requests. Never send money simply because someone demands payment through a particular method or threatens consequences if you refuse.
- Verify before responding. Independently research the person or organization contacting you. Search their name along with terms such as "scam," "review," or "complaint," and use verified contact information to confirm the request.
- Use secure payment methods. Whenever possible, use a credit card for purchases, as credit cards generally offer additional protection against fraudulent transactions.
- Act quickly if you've sent money. Contact your bank, credit card company, or payment provider immediately and ask whether the transaction can be stopped or reversed.
Residents who believe they have encountered a scam or been the victim of fraud are encouraged to report the incident. Reporting suspicious activity can help authorities identify fraudulent schemes and prevent others from becoming victims.
