Alert

Route 23 & Alexander Ave. Jughandle Road Closure Starting 11/6 at 8:00PM and Continuing Through The Weekend

Beginning at 8 p.m. today, Friday, November 6 until 6 a.m. Monday, November 9, the Route 23 northbound Alexander Avenue jughandle is scheduled to be closed and detoured, and the left lanes on Route 23 in both directions are scheduled to be closed for the installation of median guiderail and crash cushions. At least one lane on Route 23 in both directions will be maintained. Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution while driving through the work zone.

In addition, left turns from Alexander Avenue eastbound onto Route 23 northbound will be prohibited. The following detours will be in place:

Route 23 northbound Alexander Avenue Jughandle Detour:

  • Traffic on Route 23 northbound wishing to take the Alexander Avenue jughandle will be directed to continue on Route 23 northbound
  • Stay right to take the jughandle at Jackson Avenue
  • Turn left onto Jackson Avenue
  • Turn left onto Route 23 southbound
  • Stay right to take the ramp to Alexander Avenue westbound

Alexander Avenue eastbound to Route 23 northbound Detour:

  • Traffic on Alexander Avenue wishing to turn left onto Route 23 northbound will be directed to turn right onto Route 23 southbound
  • Stay right to take the jughandle just past the traffic signal where Route 23 becomes Route 202 at the Genesis car dealership
  • Turn left onto Route 23 northbound

This work is the first of five weekends in which median guiderail and crash cushions will be installed at various intersections requiring lane closures and detours. The Route 23 intersections, in which work will take place, include Newark-Pompton Turnpike, Alternate CR 511/Boulevard, Windbeam Road, and Jackson Avenue. NJDOT will provide advance notice before any closures and detours.

The $13.8 million Route 23, Alexander Road to Maple Lake Road resurfacing project resurfaced approximately three miles of Route 23 northbound from Alexander Avenue in Pequannock to  I-287 in Riverdale. In addition to resurfacing the roadway, traffic signals were upgraded at 10 intersections between Alexander Avenue in Pequannock through Maple Lake Road in Butler, Morris County, including the installation of new traffic signal foundations and masts, pedestrian signal heads and push buttons; ADA-compliant curb ramps were added; and guiderail was upgraded in both directions to meet current standards. The majority of work on the project was completed in the past year, and the guiderail and crash cushion installation is the last remaining work.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on X (Twitter) @NewJerseyDOT, on the NJDOT Facebook page, or Instagram @NewJersey.DOT.
