SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT ISSUES STATEMENT ON SUCCESSFUL CONVICTION IN ATTEMPTED MURDER OF A DEPUTY

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department welcomes the sentencing of Nicholas Campbell, who was convicted of the attempted murder of Deputy Marcus Mason. On November 6, 2026, Campbell was sentenced to 55 years to life in state prison, plus an additional six years.

On July 16, 2022, Campbell shot Deputy Mason multiple times while he was responding to a call for service in Rancho Cucamonga. Deputy Mason was critically wounded and nearly lost his life. Thanks to the quick actions of fellow deputies and medical personnel, he survived.

Deputy Mason's injuries ultimately led to his medical retirement, ending a career dedicated to serving and protecting the community. For more than four years, Marcus, his wife, Katie, and their family have endured significant hardships. Their victim impact statements during today's sentencing highlighted the lasting physical and emotional toll this attack has taken on their family.

Deputies understand the risks that come with serving their communities. However, when a deputy is attacked in the line of duty, the impact is felt throughout the entire Department. While no prison sentence can undo the harm Campbell caused or restore what Deputy Mason and his family have lost, today's sentencing brings accountability and a measure of justice for the attempted murder of a peace officer.

Sheriff Shannon Dicus stated, "Marcus was doing his job, protecting the community he swore to serve, when his life was forever changed. I am grateful that justice has been served. I
commend Marcus and Katie for their strength and courage throughout this difficult journey. I also thank the prosecution team for their dedication to delivering justice. Marcus will always be part of our Sheriff's Department family, and he and Katie have my continued support and the support of our entire Department."

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department remains dedicated to serving our communities and supporting the men and women who put their lives on the line each day. Acts of violence against law enforcement officers will not diminish our commitment to public safety or our dedication to serving the people of San Bernardino County.
