Late yesterday afternoon the Dungeness elk herd moved southeast across Keeler Road toward the Olympic Discovery Trail and Highway 101. By 5:00 this morning the elk were in the brushy fields at the end of Keeler Road, less than one-eighth of a mile from Highway 101. Motorists on U.S. 101 should be alert and use caution when driving between Simdars Road and the Sequim Bay Lodge. Bicyclists on the Olympic Discovery Trail should be alert too. On two occasions in the past 12 hours the elk have been in dense woods less than 100 feet from the trail. There are currently 26 animals in this group of elk.
