ORIGINAL RELEASE:
On 02/25/2018 at approximately 9:56 P.M., Gilroy Police Officers were dispatched to the 7400 Block of Chestnut Street regarding a suspicious person. The reporting party observed an unknown male in the backyard of their residence. Officers arrived and located the subject who immediately fled on foot. Officers used verbal commands directing the subject to surrender and again he fled and made his way onto the roof of at least two nearby residences.
Prior to making any physical contact with police, Officers noted the suspect appeared to have been bleeding from his face and a witness reported hearing a noise consistent with a fall before officers contacted him. Officers located him on the ground and they began to attempt to take him into custody. The male adult acted violently and resisted their efforts and made threatening statements. Officers used less lethal force options to try to control him and get him into custody, including an electronic control device (Taser), physical force and a carotid restraint. At some point during the struggle, the officers on scene noted the male adult was in medical distress and officers initiated life saving measures. Gilroy Fire Department Personnel also arrived assuming these measures and arranging for the immediate transport to an area trauma center. Despite life-saving efforts, the subject was later pronounced deceased at the trauma center.
The subject’s identity is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin. The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office is conducting an independent investigation to determine the cause of death. Pursuant with the county protocols, a joint investigation is also underway with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
This investigation continues to be ongoing and this information is preliminary. Anyone with information relating to this case is urged to call the Investigations Bureau at (408)846-0350.
