Detectives from Specialized Investigations Div are conducting a death investigation at the West Valley Detention Ctr.

INCIDENT: Death Investigation
LOCATION: West Valley Detention Center, Rancho Cucamonga
VICTIM: Gary Shannon, age 72 a resident of Twentynine Palms
SUMMARY:
On Sunday, March 1, 2020, at approximately 5:02 p.m., the victim, Gary Shannon was returning to the West Valley Detention Center from Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. He was in the male intake area seated at the Nurses Station when he began feeling light-headed and dizzy. Medical staff and deputies assisted Shannon onto the ground so he would not fall. Nursing staff began CPR and used the defibrillator to resuscitate him. An ambulance was requested and Shannon was transported to Kaiser Hospital. Upon arrival, medical staff continued life-saving measures however, he was pronounced deceased at approximately 6:34 p.m.
Sheriff’s Homicide Investigators responded to the detention center to conduct the investigation.
Gary Shannon was arrested on February 11, 2020, for PC288.5 Continuous lewd and lascivious acts with minors under 14 years of age. During the jail intake health screening process, Shannon informed the nursing staff that he had pre-existing medical conditions. Mr. Shannon had been receiving medical care while in custody, in addition to having previously been transported to Kaiser Hospital and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment.
An autopsy will be conducted by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office to determine the cause of death.
