DATE/TIME: Thursday, March 5, 2020 2:30 p.m.
INCIDENT: Hoist Rescue
LOCATION: Mount Baldy
VICTIM(S): Daniel Lozano, 27 years old, resident of Whittier
Raymond Guzman, 28 years old, resident of Whittier
SUMMARY:
On Thursday, March 5, 2020, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Aviation was advised by County Fire dispatch of two subjects in distress in the Mount Baldy area. The two subjects, later identified as Daniel Lozano and Raymond Guzman, were able to call 911 and advised they were stuck on a ridge and were feeling the effects of altitude sickness and could no longer continue hiking on their own. Sheriff's patrol helicopter (40king2) responded to the area and located Lozano and Guzman sitting on a ridgeline at the approximate 8,500 foot level. Neither Lozano nor Guzman was dressed for cold weather conditions and snow was still covering a large area of the mountainside.
Due to the inaccessible terrain and the condition of both subjects, the crew requested Sheriff's Air Rescue 306 to perform a hoist rescue. Once on scene, the crew of Air Rescue 306 lowered rescue personnel to Lozano and Guzman. Both were placed into rescue harnesses, hoisted into the helicopter and transported to Sheriff and County Fire personnel at a nearby landing area.
Sheriff's Air Rescue 306 is staffed by San Bernardino County Sheriff and Fire Department personnel.
