INCIDENT: Immigration/ICE Protest
Unlawful Assembly
Vandalism

LOCATION: GEO Detentions and Corrections Facility 10400 Rancho Road, Adelanto

SUSPECT(S): Leticia Hernandez, age 31 of Anaheim (arrested for vandalism)

SUMMARY:
On Sunday, June 7, 2020, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Victor Valley and Adelanto deputies responded to a planned protest scheduled to march from Highway 395 and Rancho Road to the GEO Adelanto Detention Facility in Adelanto. Deputies monitored the march, which began as a peaceful protest. Sheriff’s Aviation 40K1 and 40K3 were providing aerial support and relaying information to deputies that were along the route. The march ended at the facility, with approximately 300 persons in attendance.
At approximately 3:45 p.m., deputies received information that a large number of the protestors had become violent and were throwing rocks at the building and spraying graffiti. Further reports stated that windows were being broken, and demonstrators were attempting to breach the building. As deputies convened on the building, bottles and rocks were being thrown at them and their marked patrol vehicles. Deputies formed a line of protection at the front of the building in attempts to secure the facility and get protestors away from the building and into the parking lot. Additional deputies from all high desert stations and members of the department’s Mobile Field Force responded and added further support to securing the building and assisting with the crowd that was unruly and vandalizing the building and vehicles with rocks and spray paint.
A protestor was seen with a rag that he had partially crammed into the gas tank of a vehicle and was attempting to start the cloth on fire to ignite the car. Deputies deployed less than lethal munitions to try to stop the suspect and control the crowd. The suspect was struck and immediately ran into a group of protestors to hide from deputies. During the incident, Sheriff’s Aviation personnel made dozens of announcements on the public address system requesting the protestors disperse from the area. After nearly 2 hours of destruction and unlawful behavior, deputies were able to disperse the crowd from the area.
An employee of the facility sustained an injury from a large rock thrown by a protestor. Six vehicles belonging to the facility and twenty-seven employees’ vehicles were vandalized and damaged. Six windows of the facility were shattered, and protestors spray-painted graffiti numerous places on the building and signs. Three Sheriff’s vehicles were damaged, one with graffiti and two had tires that were slashed.
One arrest was made; Leticia Hernandez from Anaheim was arrested for vandalism.
