Drive defensively, stay alert and get to your destination safely! Check out these driving safety tips from Lancaster Station!
We were so fortunate to have Traffic Sergeant Politano join us at yesterday's Coffee with Captain. With about 250 crashes occurring in Lancaster every month, Sergeant Politano was able to share some incredible information on a wide variety of topics.
1. SPEED KILLS- Speed is ALWAYS the major factor in injury and fatality collisions. The top safety tip Sergeant Politano gave is SLOW DOWN.
2. Never trust a green light. Being a defensive and cautious driver means you cannot assume (unfortunately) that other drivers will stop. Left turns are one of the most dangerous driving maneuvers, as you are driving against oncoming traffic. As you prepare to make your left hand turn, even on a green arrow, be off the gas pedal and LOOK for oncoming traffic.
3. The same applies for a green light from a complete stop. Do not assume that cross traffic will stop. Unfortunately, drivers often run red lights. Take a second to scan the intersection before proceeding through.
4. Teen drivers are most at risk. 70% of drivers aged 16-18 WILL be involved in a traffic collision. SEVENTY percent. Take time to drive with your new driver often. Don't take for granted that they will have all the experience they need once they obtain their license. Be a great driver yourself to serve as an example to your teen. Encourage safe driving habits such as not speeding and not texting and driving.
5. Finally, purchase the newest car you can for your teen driver. Newer model vehicles have better crush capability, safety deployment systems and better safety measures than older vehicles.
With all his years of experience, we are so thankful to Sergeant Politano for sharing his knowledge with us.
Drive defensively, stay alert and get to your destination safely!
