Alert action leads to campus arrest
A UC Irvine student - who wishes to remain anonymous - deserves thanks and credit for the quick-thinking and courageous actions in helping UC Irvine Police Department identify and arrest a dangerous subject on Monday, Nov. 18. She did exactly what we teach our students to do - be aware of the surroundings and report anything that doesn't look or feel right. Her action potentially saved lives.
At 3:10 p.m. she notified UCIPD dispatch about a man with what she believed was a handgun near the Ayala Science Library. Police located and detained the subject at 3:22 p.m. Simultaneously, UCIPD was preparing a campus ZotAlert that was about to be sent when officers reported they had the subject in custody.
The student was arrested for possession of a loaded gun on campus and remains in custody on $100,000 bail.
The Orange County District Attorney charged him Wednesday, Nov. 20, with one felony count each of possessing a loaded firearm on a college campus, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person.
The student did not live on campus.
