Officers arrest man after displaying a replica gun on campus

On Thursday morning, March 13, 2014, Joaquin Antonio Ponce (25 years old) was seen in Aldrich Park near Reines Hall. Several alert UCI students saw this individual was walking through the park without a shirt on and noticed a gun in his waistband. UCIPD officers arrived within minutes and detained Ponce in Aldrich Park. The gun in Ponce’s waistband was determined to be a pellet gun that resembled a firearm. Ponce was also found to be in possession of a fixed-blade knife and a methamphetamine smoking pipe.

Ponce, a resident of Santa Ana, was taken to Orange County Jail and booked on suspicion of 626.10(b) CPC – Possession of a weapon on school grounds. Detectives are continuing the investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact UCIPD, case #14-0441.
