Spring Break Safety Tips

As you prepare and pack for spring break, remember these tips for your safety whether you’re taking a road trip or traveling abroad.

• Protect Your Information – Keep your phone locked (with a passcode) and in your possession. Disable geo-tagging features on your phone and applications so your movements are not tracked and broadcasted.

• Limit Your Alcohol – Avoid underage and excessive alcohol consumption. Excessive or binge drinking can lead to an arrest, violent crime, or serious injuries.

• Know Your Destination – Before you leave, learn about your destination and safety precautions to have a safe trip. If traveling abroad, the U.S. Department of State has a website (http://studentsabroad.state.gov) for students to find out about entry requirements, crime warnings, and health concerns.

• Keep In Contact – Keep in touch with your parents. If you will not have Internet or phone service, let your parents know. Law enforcement receives many calls from parents who fear the worst when their children haven’t contacted them. In most cases, everyone is fine but has been too busy to check in or their cell phone is out of power.

Security tips for your property can be found on the Stop.Think.Connect website at http://www.stopthinkconnect.org/tips-and-advice/safety-for-mobile-devices/

Additional travel tips from the U.S. Department of State can be found at http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2014/02/222585.htm
