Advisory
Suffolk County Police Department and AAA New York Halloween Safety Tips.
The Suffolk County Police Department and AAA New York would like to remind motorist Halloween falls on a Friday this year and expect more trick or treaters and Halloween revelers will be out on the roads over the entire weekend.
Please consider the following tips to keep children safe on Halloween:
- Be bright at night; use reflective tape on costumes and treat bags, wear light colors and carry flashlights or glow sticks for extra visibility.
- Don't wear a costume that obstructs vision. Use makeup instead of a mask.
- Wear a costume you can walk in - comfortable footwear and nothing that drags on the ground.
- Look all ways and listen for traffic before crossing streets and driveways.
- Work on side of the street at a time. Cross only at corners and crosswalks. Stay out of the roadway!
- Younger children should always be accompanied by an adult or trustworthy teen; older children should be given boundaries and should communicate with there parents along the way.
Tips for motorists:
- If possible avoid driving on residential areas where Trick or Treaters are likely to be present.
- Obey all traffic signs and signals. Be watchful for special events or parades that may result in road closures or traffic delays.
- Scan far ahead and be watchful for children who may be excitedly running from house to house or crossing at unexpected places.
- Avoid driving distractions (i.e., talking on cell phone, texting), even after traditional trick or treating hours - older children and teens might still be out without adult supervision.
- If you plan on attending an adult Halloween party where alcohol is served be sure to have a designated driver - Don't drink and drive!
