Halloween Safety Tips from the Suffolk County Police Department 5th Precinct
Over the last decade, the number of child pedestrians ages 0-14 fatally injured on Halloween has been nearly three times higher than the daily average according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Here are some tips for parents and children to remain safe on Halloween:
- Use reflective tape on costumes and treat bags, wear light colors and carry a flashlight
- Use make-up instead of a mask: don't obstruct vision!
-Wear a costume that you can walk in
-Look all ways for traffic and listen to traffic before crossing the street
-Work only one side of the street at a time, crossing only at corners and crosswalks - Stay out of the roadway!
-Younger children should always be accompanied by an adult or trustworthy teen; older children should be given boundaries and should communicate with their parents along the way
Tips for Motorists:
-Try to avoid cutting through residential areas where trick or treaters might be present
- Obey traffic signals and signs and travel with caution
-Watch attentively for children running from house to house or crossing in unexpected places
- Avoid driving distractions
-If you are attending a party where alcohol is being served, make sure you have a designated driver!
The Suffolk County Police Department 5th Precinct would like to wish everyone a very happy and safe Halloween!
