On Thursday, February 4th, 2016, 2nd Precinct School Resource Officer Andrew ‘Drew’ Fiorillo was honored at a fund raising dinner hosted by The Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education. Officer Drew was chosen by the foundation as their 2016 Community Honoree for his never ending dedication, devotion and commitment to the School Resource Officer (SRO) program.
The Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education (HFEE) is a non-profit volunteer group of education supporters who work with a board of directors to fund innovative and exciting educational opportunities for all children in the Huntington School District. This funding affords the teachers access to programs that are not funded by the school budget. Often these new programs are then incorporated into the curriculum on an ongoing basis. HFEE has spent more than two decades raising funds and giving it all away through two grant programs that encourage innovative classroom practices.
One of the districts Officer Drew has been assigned to since 2004 is the Huntington School District. Widely known in his schools as ‘Officer Drew’, Officer Fiorillo has worked hard to foster understanding, trust and respect for the Suffolk County Police Department through his SRO role. Regularly mentoring at-risk students, standing in as a liaison between students and social agencies and enhancing anti-gang initiatives are just some of the invaluable ways in which Officer Drew has become an integral figure in the school environment.”
Attending the ceremony in support of Officer Drew were retired Second Precinct Commanding Officer Inspector Ed Brady, Deputy Inspector Bill Read, Detective John Chiquitucto, Police Officers Claudia Delgado, Anthony Iadevaio, Thomas O’Neill and Intelligence Analyst Matt Haas.
