The Grosse Pointe Woods Department of Public Safety has once again been awarded a Traffic Enforcement Grant

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GRANT AWARDED

Beginning October 1st, the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning awarded several law enforcement agencies in Wayne County a traffic safety grant. The grant, for $259,000, will allow 10 metro Detroit police departments to schedule special patrols to focus on impaired driving, occupant protection, red-light running, distracted driving and speed enforcement.

This will be the 2nd consecutive year that the Grosse Pointe Woods Department of Public Safety has been awarded this grant, subsequently allowing the department to have an increased visual presence on the roadways. During the 2016-17 grant period, the Grosse Pointe Woods Department of Public Safety logged 267 total hours dedicated to the grant. This resulted in a total of 336 vehicles stop and a total of 347 citations issued which resulted in 46 total arrests. Of the 46 arrests, 15 were unlicensed or suspended drivers, 11 operating while intoxicated (alcohol and/or drugs), and 24 other drug possession and/or warrant arrests. It is also important to note that of the 347 citations issued, 46 were for failing to wear a seat belt, which included 9 unsecured children under the age of 7. There was also a total of 66 uninsured motorist, 42 red light citations, 41 speeding citations, 10 texting while driving, and 104 other civil infraction citations.

The Grosse Ile Police Department is the lead agency and is joined by the following police departments; Gibraltar, Southgate, Taylor, Wyandotte, Rockwood, Allen Park, Riverview, Grosse Pointe Woods and Huron Township.

The collection of police departments has designated October as the month to focus on speed and seat belt enforcement around schools. The goal is to reduce traffic crashes along the main roads that lead to a school and combat the significant number of complaints police receive by those living in the neighborhoods that are home to a school. In addition to patrols, officers will be making contact with school districts to help educate motorists about safe driving.

Other enforcement mobilizations will include stepped up patrols around St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day (impaired driving and belt enforcement) amongst others.
