Incident: Man Arrested for DWAI Drugs after Critically Injuring a Pedestrian
 
Location: Southbound Straight Path, near State Avenue, Wyandanch
 
Date/Time: Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at approximately 2 p.m.
 
Suffolk County Police today arrested a Dix Hills man for driving while ability impaired by drugs after he struck and critically injured a pedestrian in Wyandanch.
 
Daniyal Syed was driving a 2013 Toyota RAV4 southbound on Straight Path when his vehicle struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the street from the west side of the road to east side of the road near State Avenue at approximately 2 p.m. The victim, Jonathan Yanes, 22, of Wyandanch, was transported by Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Community Ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he was listed in critical condition.
 
Syed, 24, of Westminster Avenue, Dix Hills, was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and four counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree.
 
Syed’s vehicle was impounded for a safety check. He will be held at the First Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on April 19.
 
Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed or has information on this crash to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6555.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
