On Friday September 7, 2018 the Stokes County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a scammer calling people in Stokes County and identifying themselves as a Deputy with the Stokes County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer stated they were Deputy James Marshall or the Chief Deputy and told the victim they were calling because they had failed to report for jury duty and were being fined $500.00-$1,000.00 for the offense. The scammer then instructed the victim to obtain Green Dot Visa Cards to pay fines. The caller identification (ID) showed the number was coming from 336-593-6438 and 336-593-8787.

*SCAM ALERT* The Stokes County Sheriff’s Office has no Deputy by the name of James Marshall and the Chief Deputy has not called anyone about paying a fine with Green Dot Visa Cards for failing to report for jury duty. The Stokes County Sheriff’s Office would not call anyone and demand payment of a fine for not appearing for jury duty. Please do not make any payment to anyone due to this request. The Stokes County Sheriff’s Office is investigating these reported crimes. Impersonation of a law enforcement officer is a serious crime under NC State Law.
