Press Release (Robbery)
ARRAIGNMENT/BAIL STATUS: Rivera-Ramos was arraigned in Amsterdam City Court and remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility without bail.
INCIDENT NARRATIVE: On August 11th, 2019 at approximately 9:24 pm, members of the Amsterdam Police Department were dispatched to the Stewarts Shop located at 132 Market Street in Amsterdam for a robbery of the store by a man brandishing a utility style knife. Members of the Amsterdam Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State Police saturated the area in attempts to locate the suspect who fled the scene west on Bunn Street. The suspect was unable to be located. A neighborhood canvas was completed yielding surveillance footage that showed the suspect’s direction of travel.
Responding detectives were able to secure video surveillance from the Stewart’s Shop from which the suspect, 31 year-old Amsterdam resident Jose O. Rivera-Ramos was identified. On August 13th at approximately 1:30 p.m. Rivera-Ramos was spotted in the area of McElwain Avenue by Amsterdam Police Detectives where he was taken into custody without incident.
Rivera-Ramos was taken to Amsterdam Police Headquarters to be processed on the listed charges. While there during an interview he made admissions of guilt to police as to committing the robbery. Montgomery County District Attorney Kelli McCoski also assisted in the investigation.
