Stolen vehicles are on the rise throughout West Michigan.
The Combined Auto Theft Team, funded by the Automobile Prevention Authority, is encouraging residents to lock their vehicles and secure vehicle keys.
There have been several recent noteworthy burglaries of cell phone stores, gun shops, and party stores. The suspects in many of these incidents have used stolen cars to facilitate the criminal activity. Cars are being stolen for the sole purpose of committing these crimes.
In nearly all instances, thieves were able to steal the cars because the cars were left unlocked with keys or key fobs inside. In other incidents, automotive businesses were entered where keys were unsecured and easily accessible to the criminally-minded subjects.
The Combined Auto Theft Team has seen a nearly 25% increase in stolen motor vehicles compared to last year. These numbers appear consistent throughout West Michigan.
All leads are being followed regarding the stolen vehicles and burglaries to bring the suspects to justice.
