Swimming Pool Safety Reminder Message
Swimming Pool Safety
With the weather warming up and limited access to beaches, it's a good time to remind ourselves about swimming pool safety.
Every day in the United States, about ten people drown, and two of them are children aged 14 and younger.
Important: A major misconception about drowning is that you’ll be able to hear someone thrash around or yell for help if they’re going under. In reality, drowning is usually silent, and you may not know someone is in trouble until it’s too late.
Common causes of drowning and injuries include:
lack of barriers
lack of supervision
alcohol use
It’s important to ensure everyone follows simple safety steps to stay safer in and around the water.
1. Never leave a child unattended in or near water. Designate a water watcher, and stay in arm's reach of young children.
2. Keep an eye on any intoxicated adults who could fall in or forget to be vigilant about supervising their own children.
3. Teach children how to swim.
4. Teach children to stay away from drains.
5. Ensure all pools - both in your backyard and any pool you may visit - have compliant drain covers.
6. Install proper barriers, covers, and alarms on and around your pool.
7. If a child is missing, check the water first.
8. Know how to perform CPR on children and adults.
