Arraignment held in the Monteith PTO Embezzlement case and the Committee for Renewal of GPPSS Millage Embezzlement case
Quinn Keith Smith, 43, of Grosse Pointe Woods, was arraigned today, before Judge Theodore Metry, in the Grosse Pointe Woods Municipal Court after turning himself in to Detectives on embezzlement charges related to the Monteith Elementary School’s PTO and for the Committee for the Renewal of the Grosse Pointe Public School System’s Millage.
Defendant Smith was the treasurer of the PTO between July 2017 and January 2020. An audit of the organization’s finances revealed the occurrence of unauthorized activity on the account. On February 12, 2020, a report was filed with Grosse Pointe Woods police. It is alleged that the defendant accessed the PTO account without authorization and embezzled over $91,000.00 in funds over two and a half years.
Defendant Smith was also the treasurer of the GPPSS Millage Committee for Renewal between October 2019 and January 2020. An audit of the organization’s finances revealed the occurrence of unauthorized activity on the account. On February 27, 2020, a report was filed with Grosse Pointe Woods police. It is alleged that the defendant accessed the Renew GPPSS account without authorization and embezzled over $1,700.00 in funds over three months.
Smith has been charged with Embezzlement of $50,000 and less than $100,000, a 15 year felony in relation to the Monteith PTO case. Smith was also charged with Embezzlement of $1,000 or more but less than $20,000 from a non-profit or charitable organization, a 10 year felony, in relation to the Committee for the Renewal of the GPPSS millage. Defendant Smith was arraigned before Judge Theodore Metry on June 3, 2020, in which a not guilty plea was entered on both cases. Judge Metry set bond in the matter of the Monteith PTO case at $25,000 (10%) and $5,000 (10%) in the Millage Renewal Case.
Defendant Smith is due back in court on June 24, 2020 at 10:00am for a Probable Cause Conference. The exam in both matters has been set for July 15, 2020 at 10:00am in the Grosse Pointe Woods Municipal Court.
