Today's deceased St. Helena gunshot victim identified as 30-year-old Steven Glover. Two men charged with murder.

At approximately 1:00 p.m. today, Sheriff's Office deputies responded to Stonewood Road — near Fripp Point Road — St. Helena Island to a report of a gunshot victim.

When they arrived, deputies located an adult male — later identified as 30-year-old Steven Glover of St. Helena — who died at the scene as a result of apparent gunshot wounds.

Sheriff's Office investigators and the Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene to interview witnesses and process for forensic evidence.

During the investigation, two persons of interest in Glover's shooting death were identified: 21-year-old Channon Preston of St. Helena and 20-year-old Xavier Polite of Seabrook.

Preston and Polite were located and interviewed by investigators regarding their involvement in the incident.

After evaluating evidence in the case and following the interviews, investigators charged Preston and Polite with with Murder and Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Violent Crime in Glover's death.

Early this evening, they were transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center and incarcerated. Preston and Polite have yet to receive bond hearings for the charges.  

So far in the investigation, several firearms and other evidentiary items have been recovered, which will be subjected to forensic examination.

The Beaufort County Coroner's Office advised that a forensic autopsy will be scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
