Common Holiday Season Crimes

Date: December 11, 2020
No: 20-34 Subject: Common Holiday Season Crimes
With the holidays approaching the Racine Police Department has seen an increase in robberies during property exchanges related to online transactions. The Racine Police Department would like to inform and provide some suggestions to avoid these common robberies. In today’s world online transactions such as Facebook Marketplace among many others that result in a face to face exchanges have become common place. When meeting with the seller or buyer the Racine Police Department would encourage you to meet in a heavily populated area. Places such as in front of the Racine Police Department, COP houses, or a populated place of business is ideal. Conducting these meetings during daylight hours is also highly encouraged. Robberies have recently occurred when the victim has agreed to meet in a park or at a private residence to exchange money. Always bring a cellphone with you and try to not come alone if possible.
The Racine Police Department also wants the public to be aware of a common tactic where the suspect or suspects claim to be an employee of the water department or similar organization. Suspects use a story that they need access to your house to read a meter and once inside may distract the homeowner while another suspect looks for valuables. Frequently suspects may be wearing a vague ID badge along with a vest. If the Racine Water Department would need to personally check a meter it will be during normal business hours during the week. Also Water Department Employees drive a blue truck with proper markings for the water department. If in this circumstances before proceeding citizens are encouraged to call Meter Supervisor Mike Wurster at 262-636-9186 or the general number at 262-636-9181 for employee verification. Thanks and have a great holiday season!
