Following a few tips will help parents & students transition back to school theft free! See back to school safety here!

Many parents and students are excitedly preparing to return back to school campuses across our county and city! Lancaster Sheriff's Station takes this time to caution our parents to be aware of on-campus thefts.

Here are a few safety tips that may help your young student keep their items safe:

1. If at all possible, don’t let kids take expensive electronics to school. Cell phones, smart watches and expensive laptops are not necessary for young kids to be taking to school. Electronics are the #1 item stolen on school campuses.

2. Don’t let your child take cash to school. Most schools allow parents to pay for lunches online or ahead of time to ensure your young child doesn’t have to carry cash.

3. If your child’s school offers lockers, make sure you child uses it to secure any valuables such as sports gear, shoes, laptops and books when not in use.

4. Lockers only work if the lock is secured! Make sure your child secures and latches the lock on their locker every time. When kids are changing out for PE or rushing from one class to the next, it's not uncommon for them to leave the lock unlatched for quicker access. This leaves their valuables unsecured in an empty locker room or hallway. Make sure they secure the lock every time.

5. The #2 item stolen from school campuses are bicycles. Invest in a good bike lock and make sure your child uses it whenever they leave their bike unattended.

Following just a few tips will help your transition back to school be a theft free one!

And a big THANK YOU to all of our teachers across the Antelope Valley that have taken all of these changes like the heroes they are!
