Do a self evaluation to ensure you are practicing good driving habits as we celebrate Distracted Driver Awareness Month!
April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month.
As we did last week, Lancaster Sheriff's Station encourages our residents to do self evaluations to ensure they are practicing good driving habits.
Here are a few safety tips to ride safe every time:
1. Designate your passenger as your “designated texter.” Allow them access to your phone to respond to calls or messages or navigating.
2. If your driver is texting or otherwise distracted, tell them to stop and focus on the road.
3. Use a "do not disturb" setting on your app to let anyone trying to contact you know you are unable at the time.
4. Secure loose items so you aren't tempted to reach down and pick up items if they fall off the seat.
5. It's not just texting: Applying mascara in your rearview mirror is as dangerous as driving impaired. Get up a few minutes earlier to groom and prep.
6. Cell phone use can be habit-forming. Struggling to not text and drive? Put the cell phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat of the vehicle until you arrive at your destination.
Taking your eyes off the road for 5 seconds means you can cover the distance of one football field - while going 55mph. Be a good example to your passengers and other drivers by self evaluating your driving habits. Cut those bad habits out before it's too late.
