Thomas Akeem Bryan III apprehended after 5-hour stand-off with Sheriff's Office deputies
Around 2:30 this afternoon, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office successfully apprehended 33-year-old Thomas Akeem Bryan III, who had barricaded himself inside his Hilton Head Island residence for more than five hours.
Deputies responded to Bryan’s home at 27C Oakview Road just before 9 a.m. Thursday after a 9-1-1 caller alerted law enforcement to a domestic violence incident in progress there.
Contact was made with Bryan III, who was believed to be armed and dangerous. It was soon confirmed he was holding a woman inside the home against her will.
At 10:45 a.m. Bryan III released the victim, who was treated at the scene by Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue. She was subsequently taken to Hilton Head Hospital, where she is continuing to receive care. A Sheriff’s Office victim’s advocate was on hand to provide assistance to the woman.
After negotiations were unsuccessful in getting Bryan III to surrender, the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was deployed and Bryan III was safely taken into custody.
Bryan III has been charged with kidnapping and second-degree domestic violence. He also faces a previous charge of parole and probation violation.
