Project Homekey

On October 12th, the City Council approved submitting an application to the State that could bring up to $20 million to Rohnert Park to build interim housing for people experiencing homelessness. If awarded the funds, we will convert a City-owned site located at 6020 Labath Ave adjacent to the City’s new fire station into a 60-unit interim housing program.

Over the last few years, we’ve heard from many businesses and residents about homelessness.  Many parts of the City, including the area of Martin Avenue, Labath Avenue, and the creek have had numerous encampments, people in vehicles, and associated nuisances.  Many of you have asked what can be done.  In response, we are looking at a way to get people off the streets, out of the creeks, and out of encampments.

This interim housing program would not be a drop-in center, feeding center, day facility, or services center.  This would be a housing complex with services and dining only for the residents of the complex.  It will better enable the City to enforce no camping laws to reduce encampments.

The City may know as early as this December whether it has been awarded the funds or not. If the funds are awarded, the City would begin construction right away, which is expected to take 8-12 months. Prior to and throughout construction, the City and its partners would engage the property owners, residents and businesses in the area to solicit feedback and address concerns.
