News Release: Police Investigate Shooting Last Night at Stanford Shopping Center

Police are investigating a shooting that occurred in the parking lot of Stanford Shopping Center last night.  The victim’s injuries are not life threatening.  The unknown suspect fled in a vehicle and remains at large.

On Thursday, February 10, 2022, at about 9:49 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call from the victim’s girlfriend stating that he had recently been shot in the parking lot of the Stanford Shopping Center at 180 El Camino Real.  The victim and his girlfriend had already self-transported to a local hospital at the time of the call.  Police received no additional calls from the community about shots fired or any sort of suspicious circumstance in the parking lot.

Officers responded to the scene and to meet with the reporting party and the victim.  Officers located an expended casing from a .40 caliber handgun at the scene and will be processing it for evidence.

The investigation revealed that the victim, a male in his twenties, and his girlfriend had just returned to their parked vehicle on the east side of the shopping center.  As the victim was getting into the car, an unknown suspect approached him and fired two shots.  One struck the victim in his hand, and the other struck the victim in his foot.  The suspect then fled the scene.  The girlfriend transported the suspect to the hospital and notified police.

The victim is not cooperating with the police at this early juncture and is not providing investigators with additional information.  Officers and detectives are nonetheless continuing the investigation.

Police located a witness at the scene who reported that they saw the suspect run up to the victim after getting out of the back seat of a white BMW.  After shooting at the victim twice, the suspect ran back to the white BMW and got into the back seat.  The vehicle then drove away eastbound through the parking lot.  The witness could only describe the suspect as a male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, about 5 feet 6 inches tall with a slim build.  The witness did not provide a description of the driver of the vehicle and could not further describe the BMW.  The witness did not call the police to report what they had seen.

Police have reviewed preliminary surveillance video from the scene and have not located footage of the incident.  If additional footage becomes available and the images would aid in identifying the suspect or the suspect vehicle, police will release them to the community.
