Man Arrested for DWI After Motor Vehicle Crash Injures Police Officer

Suffolk County Police yesterday arrested a man for driving while intoxicated after he crashed his car into a police vehicle, injuring a police officer, in Brentwood.

Nicolas Chicas was driving a 2000 Toyota Corolla in the left lane of northbound 5th Avenue when he attempted to turn right on to Arizona Avenue and crashed his vehicle into the driver’s side door of a marked police vehicle traveling northbound in the right lane at 9:17 p.m. The police vehicle had been responding to a call, with lights and siren activated, at the time of the crash.

The occupant of the police vehicle, a Third Precinct Patrol officer, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Chicas was not injured. Third Precinct police officers responded to the scene and determined Chicas was intoxicated.

Chicas, 48, of 35 Connecticut Ave., Bay Shore, was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. He is being held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on February 28.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
